John Cena’s Last Match Could’ve Included Rob Van Dam
Rob Van Dam revealed that he was in talks with WWE about a potential match against John Cena as part of Cena’s farewell tour. Speaking on TMZ’s Inside the Ring, RVD confirmed WWE's interest in running back their classic clash before his recent double heel fracture put those plans to rest.
The timing makes the story even bigger, as Cena’s farewell run has only seven days left, with the 17-time World Champion set for his remaining WWE dates in Boston and New York City before closing his in-ring career with the WWE. RVD admitted he was excited about the possibility, but fate had other plans.
“I wanted to be one of the return matches for John Cena on his retirement tour. I was talking to them. There was a lot of interest. Without giving away too many details.. we were probably going to do it. And then I broke my heels.”
Despite the missed opportunity, RVD was upbeat, saying he believes things happen for a reason. He also touched on other topics during the interview, including the recent Matt Riddle controversy.
John Cena vs Rob Van Dam, One Night Stand 2006
The two superstars met in one of the most infamous matches of Cena’s career, ECW One Night Stand 2006. In front of a raucous and hostile ECW crowd, RVD defeated Cena for the WWE Championship in a match where the atmosphere was as memorable as the result. Fans held up the now-legendary If Cena Wins We Riot sign, creating one of the most iconic visuals in WWE history.
While fans won’t get to see a full-circle Cena vs RVD rematch as part of the farewell tour, the story underscores just how much Cena’s retirement run could have leaned into his past rivalries. For now, fans will have to look back on their unforgettable 2006 battle while Cena closes out his legendary career.
